Coronation Street star Katie McGlynn urges women to get ‘life-saving’ cervical smear test

Katie McGlynn urges women to get a smear test

In the current climate of the pandemic, attending screening is still crucial. Katie McGlynn stressed this point on Lorraine due to over 600,000 women missing their appointment in the first lockdown. With cervical cancer being the fourth most common cancers, what are the symptoms to spot?

Katie said: “It’s the best way to protect yourself so don’t be too shy, too scared or too embarrassed.”

The former Coronation Street star was so adamant in how easy it is to have a cervical cancer screening. She videoed herself showing the efficiency of the test to “prove to you all there is nothing to worry about.”

Dr Sally Harris helped Katie with the test and said: “There is lots of misinformation regarding a screening but its relatively pain free, maybe a little uncomfortable but not a long test at all.”

Katie McGlynn spoke to Loraine and said: “A lot of woman genuinely get embarrassed but it’s so quick there is no need to worry even during pandemic I found it better.

“I felt more protected in a way.

“I strongly urge woman if you are able to go get it done definitely do it.

“Woman shouldn’t be embarrassed and shouldn’t stress about it as doctors see it day in and day out.

“It’s very clinical and is done in two min.

“It’s a little bit uncomfortable but fine.”

Katie asked Dr Hilary regarding the pandemic and for those women who are scared of a smear test because they are high risk what they should do because “cancer doesn’t stop because of COVID-19?”

Dr Hilary answered: “If you are high risk its more important that you have a follow up.

“We are not testing cancer testing abnormal cells it’s important to note which could l lead to cancer.

“If invited have it done its very important as people and will help give you peace of mind.”

Lorraine discussed how powerful Katie’s storyline was in Coronation Street when her character, Sinead Tinker, tragically died from cervical cancer.

“I still get messages from woman who tell me they had put off going for a screening but decided to after watching the story,” Katie said.

“I also get lots of messages still today from nurses thanking me which is amazing.

“I know I might sound like a broken record, but ladies please go for your screening because it could save a life.”

Lorraine added: “We are so lucky in this country that we are able to protect ourselves by attending a screening so why wouldn’t we?”
