Coronavirus maps have tracked the deadly COVID-19 across more than 20 countries on its path from China, with nearly 80,000 cases worldwide as of February 24. The disease has inspired global panic on its course, overwhelming emergency services who try to identify and contain the virus before it spreads under the radar.

Where is the coronavirus now?

Coronavirus is believed to have first emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan, in the eastern region of the country.

Several thousand cases were able to develop there before it spilled out into the rest of the world, initially to other provinces and nearby countries.

However, in 2020, its spread far beyond China, into Europe and the US, where it has now settled in pockets.

Researchers have quickly developed tools to track the spread of the virus over the world in a bid to understand the disease.

One team with John’s Hopkins University in the US created a global dashboard for the virus, which shows how many cases have developed so far.

According to the dashboard, officials have confirmed a total of 79,524 COVID-19 cases, 2,626 deaths and 25,157 recoveries.

They found the most cases – a total of 77,150 – in mainland China, but other countries have noted a steady increase over the last two months.

The Johns Hopkins dashboard notes the most cases in the following countries:

– Others: 691

– Italy: 215

– Japan: 154

– Singapore: 89

– Hong Kong: 79

– Iran: 61

– Thailand: 35

– US: 35

– Taiwan: 30

– Australia: 22

– Malaysia: 22

– Vietnam: 16

– United Arab Emirates: 13

– UK: 13

– France: 12

– Macau: 10

– Canada: 9

– Philippines: 3

– India: 3

– Nepal

– Cambodia

– Israel

– Belgium

– Finland

– Sweden

– Egypt

– Sri Lanka

Currently, growing COVID-19 cases have roused concern in Italy, where the disease has caused more than 200 infections.

COVID-19 has caused the most cases in one of the country’s northernmost regions of Lombardy, where four of five deaths have arisen.

Austrian officials refused entry to an Italian train trying to enter the country on Sunday after it was reported two passengers were showing fever symptoms.

While the suspension is now lifted, experts continue to hunt for the origin of the latest outbreak, a “super spreader”.

According to authorities, the disease started making rounds last week when a man in his late 30s became critically ill in Codogno.
