Contact lens hack lets you remove them hands-free

Those of you who wear contact lenses: How long do you spend removing them each evening?

TikToker lalaleluu obviously had the same thought in mind when sharing this hack, aiming to save time for lens wearers and also make life easier for those who don’t like to touch their eyes.

Her video showing a unique trick to remove contacts has now been liked over 500,000 times, while a duet of the technique by mahearama has been almost 8 million times.

The technique itself is fairly simple. Here’s what to do:

  • Hold your eyelids (upper and lower) open with your index finger and thumb.
  • Look in towards the bridge of your nose.
  • As you move your eye back out, blink and squeeze the eye shut slightly.
  • The lens should fold over and remove itself.

It really does look like it works, and it does… to a point.

Paul Morris, Specsavers Director of Professional Advancement says that the hack is suited to a specific type of lens not commonly worn.

He tells Metro.co.uk: ‘There are various methods of removing contact lenses and the one shown here with lid stretching and blinking has been successful for some wearers of Rigid/Hard contact lenses over the years.

‘These harder lenses are very much in the minority of lenses worn these days and this form of removal would not be the optimal method for the softer lenses that are the mainstay for most lens wearers or indeed the preferred technique for Rigid/Hard lenses.’

The preferred method is ‘using a clean hand and fingers to help the removal of the lens in a more controlled way,’ which Pail adds, ‘is especially vital when using reusable or monthly lenses.’

Squishing lenses you need to wear again is not recommended, but if you’re struggling to remove yours at the end of the day, you should speak to your optician or optometrist.

Unfortunately the quickest methods aren’t always the best.
