Measles: German Bundestag approves vaccination

As of March 2020, the vaccination against measles is a statutory duty. All children, staff in nurseries, schools and other community facilities need to be in the future to vaccinate. The Bundestag has decided.

The so-called measles protection law stipulates that all children from the age of first year upon entry into the school or Kindergarten must present to the Standing Committee on vaccination recommended measles vaccinations. Also in the care of a childminder, a certificate must be made about the measles vaccination. The same is true for people who are in community facilities, such as educators, teachers, day care providers, and medical personnel. Also, asylum-seekers and refugees need to have the Vaccinations four weeks after inclusion in a community accommodation.

"Measles are much underestimated too often. They are highly contagious and can even have fatal consequences. This infectious disease poses a particular threat to those who cannot protect themselves: our children. That’s why we promote Measles in the kindergarten, the school, and at Kindertagespflege", Federal Minister of health, Jens Spahn says.

A person or child is not vaccinated, commits an offense and must in the future reckon with a fine of up to 2,500 Euro. Unvaccinated children can be excluded from attending kindergarten, not vaccinated personnel may not be employed in community or health facilities.

In regional model projects, it allows pharmacists to vaccinate adults against influenza. The pharmacist will be trained for this purpose beforehand by Doctors.
