Between the latest nor’easter, the still-looming dangers of a certain virus, and Punxsutawney Phil’s dire prediction on Groundhog Day that we’ll have six more weeks of winter, our children are quite literally climbing the walls right now. It may may be time to invest in some indoor climbing toys, swings, ladders, and more so kids can ascend, swing, jump, or otherwise shake their sillies out without driving us up the wall too.
When we first thought the pandemic was going to keep us indoors for a month or two, turning our homes into indoor climbing gyms and replicas of Chuck E. Cheese didn’t seem all that tempting or worth the investment. Now, some of us might wish we’d done this sooner. Though health experts have deemed playgrounds OK, as long as kids stay distant from each other, wash their hands, and wear masks, we still need options for when it’s too cold outside. (That’s not to mention what happens when you actually wind up in a 10-day quarantine!)
If ever you took your child to an indoor play space for a rainy day or a birthday party in the Beforetimes, you know that those places are many a kid’s dream come true with all their places to climb, slide, tumble, bounce, toss harmless objects at each other. And we imagine microbes felt the same way about such places. For this reason we are also grateful that toy manufacturers big and small have devised ways for children to play in the safety of their own homes. Our eardrums are also happy about this.
Here, we have gathered some of the play structures and toys that encourage toddlers and older kids to get moving indoors. There are foam blocks to stack, and beautiful wooden ladders to climb. We’ve also discovered swings and rings that can be installed safely indoors for our sensory-craving kiddos. Plus there are toys and tools that encourage balancing play and aiming prowess. Find the right one of these, and your kids might find themselves disappointed when you’re finally able to get them outside to play.
