It may surprise some to know that the leggings we’ve been wearing during lockdown may be causing bloating. Tight clothing can cause constipation as well as pain and swelling in the abdomen.
Constipation and bloating expert Dr. Megan Rossi warned Express.co.uk readers not to wear leggings all day.
She said: “We know wearing out gym gear all day, so wearing really tight clothes can actually exacerbate bloating.
“So, if you are going to the gym, get out of your tight gym gear. Don’t go to brunch in it.
“That’s another important strategy to fight bloating.”
The problem is a real medical syndrome, which has been observed in various journals.
“It’s a concept called the tight pants syndrome, and it was first described in a medical journal back in 1993 I think. It’s a legit syndrome,” Megan said.
The expert also suggests a certain exercise in the morning.
She said: “In my book, I discussed a yoga flow, which has actually been shown in clinical trials to release trapped gas.”
The flow includes exercises such as cat, cow, for example, which stretches the back and abdomen.

Dr. Megan said: “It’s a 15-minute routine I recommend all of my clients do each morning.
That can help really destress a stressed gut, as well as allowing the release of any trapped gas.”
What is tight pants syndrome?
Tight trousers can cause health issues, believe it or not. Tight trousers can cause a whole host of bowel problems.
These include heartburn and abdominal distention, or bloating.
Megan includes leggings in this category.
Tight jeans can have the same effect, as well as tight belts.
These tight clothes can also cause problems from the nerves, causing meralgia paresthetica.
Shaping underwear can cause this problem, which results in pain and tingling in the thighs, eventually causing them to be painful to the touch.
Methods to ease bloating
Exercise
Gentle exercise can help to release gas from the bowel. Going for a walk can help.
Making sure your posture is correct can also help dislodge gas.
Take a warm bath
A warm bath feels like a remedy to all sorts of physical and psychological ills.
It can soothe abdominal pain and the destressing benefits may release gas.
Massage
Massaging your abdomen could help if done right. Start by the right hip bone and move in a circular motion across the upper belly area and down to the left hip bone.
