Sir Michael Caine health: ‘It takes a long time to get better’ Actor discusses injury

Strictly's Shirley Ballas reveals she has a broken ankle

Sir Michael Caine, 87, has appeared in more than 130 films during a career spanning over 60 years, and is considered a British film icon. Even icons suffer with falls and injuries as in the case when he found himself needing the use of a walking stick of falling quite badly while in his garden.

Sir Michael Caine experienced a nasty ankle injury back in 2018.

The star admitted he uses a walking stick to help him get around and to ease pressure on his ankle.

Michael broke his ankle after slipping in snow and joked that he uses the device in case a lift is broken.

His representative said at the time that the esteemed actor had been in the garden when the incident happened, adding: “[He] is in fine health and great spirits.”

He was subsequently seen using a wheelchair during his recovery and has been walking with a stick in recent outings.

Appearing on ITV’s The Jonathan Ross Show two years ago the actor said: “It takes a long time to get better. I am nearly there.

“If you have a broken ankle, everywhere you go, the lift is out of order. You’ll notice that”

A broken ankle is also called a fractured ankle.

It can happen when one or more bones in the ankle joint break.

The ankle joint is made up of the following bones:

The tibia is the larger bone in your lower leg. It’s also called the shinbone.

Also called the calf bone, the fibula is the smaller bone in your lower leg.

The talus is the small bone between the heel bone (the calcaneus), and the tibia and fibula.

Symptoms of a broken ankle include:

  • Severe pain
  • Swelling
  • Tenderness
  • Bruising
  • Difficultly walking or moving foot
  • Difficulty bearing weight
  • Foot appears to be crooked (dislocated)
  • Dizziness (from pain)
  • Bone sticking out of the skin
  • Bleeding (if bone pierces the skin)

It wasn’t all doom and gloom for the icon actor as whilst recovering, the father-of-two wrote a book, titled Blowing the Bloody Doors Off: And Other Lessons in Life.

Speaking about the autobiography, Michael explained: “I was going to write the book and I was doing notes on it.

“Then I broke my ankle and I’m sitting there doing nothing, watching television in the daytime.

“In the book I write something which I say to my children and grandchildren, ‘If you find a bad situation, try to use the difficulty and find something good in it.’”

He continued: “I thought, ‘I’m sitting here for weeks with this broken ankle, use the difficulty.’

“So I wrote the book.”
