Plastic surgeon shares simple at-home test to see if you have receding hairline

As we age, it’s normal for hairlines to begin to move slightly higher above the forehead.

For men, this can begin as early as late teens to early 20s. It’s difficult to stop hairline recession once it has started.

For many people, hair loss is caused by a combination of genetics and ageing with some more predisposed to it than others.

You can determine your susceptibility to receding hair with a simple at-home test by using a ruler.

Plastic surgeon and medical influencer Dr Anthony Youn often answers common questions and debunks medical myths on his YouTube channel, which often sees his videos go viral.

In the short video released on his YouTube channel, Dr Youn shares the simple at-home method to test whether you have a receding hairline – and all you need is a ruler.

"In women, the distance between the brow to the hairline is about five to six cm, normally," he begins.

"In men, that distance is about six to eight cm.”

Anything less than that measurement, it usually means your hairline is receding.

What can cause a receding hairline?

Causes for receding hairline include:

  • Over-styling hair (especially with heat)
  • Choosing tight hairstyles like cornrows and braiding
  • Using chemicals such as bleach and peroxide to colour hair
  • Eating a diet that’s high in saturated fat, processed foods, preservatives, and sugar
  • Cigarettes
  • Inflammatory scalp diseases like lupus or frontal fibrosing alopecia.

The way in which you style your hair can help reduce the appearance of a receding hair line.

Some popular hairstyles include:

  • Crew cut
  • Short cut
  • Buzz cut
  • Clean shave
  • Growing facial hair

It's important to note that hair loss is a part the ageing process and shouldn’t spark any major medical reason.

If you’re experiencing mass hair loss, bald spots, patchiness, or other unusual hair loss symptoms, however, talk with your primary care physician or dermatologist.

Hair loss can be a sign of an underlying health condition.
