Double Olympic champion Nicola Adams is swapping the boxing gloves for high heels as she’ll waltz on the dance floor in this year’s Strictly Come Dancing. Why was she scared of losing her sight?

The lady from Leeds retired from boxing at the age of 37 over fears of sight loss.

Turning 38 on October 26, Nicola penned an open letter in the Yorkshire Evening Post about her decision.

She wrote: “I’ve made the very difficult decision to step down from the ring.

“I’m immensely honoured to have represented our country – to win double Olympic gold medals and then the WBO championship belt is a dream come true.

“But it’s not without taking its toll on my body, and aside from the expected aches and pains.

“I’ve been advised that any further impact to my eye would most likely lead to irreparable damage and permanent vision loss.”

Nicola’s last fight took place in September at the Royal Albert Hall in London; there, she drew against Maria Salinas.

Giving up the sport hasn’t seen Nicola’s fighting passion dwindle, it’s just been redirected.

Nicola will be dancing with a same-sex partner on the BBC One show – making history.

Strictly is due to kick off on October 24th, with a statement issued by the show.

“The sex of each partner within a coupling should have no bearing on their routine,” it said.

The statement continued: “Strictly Come Dancing is an inclusive show and is proud to have featured same sex dancing among the professional dancers.

“Nicola Adams requested an all-female pairing, which we are happy to facilitate.”

Nicola’s real life romantic partner is model Ella Baig – 15 years her junior.

Sight loss

The NHS documented almost two million people living with slight loss in the UK.

If you’re partially sighted or blind you will be referred to a specialist low-vision clinic.

An ophthalmologist will measure your visual acuity and your field of vision.

Visual acuity is measured by your ability to see detail at a distance.

The field of vision refers to how much you can see from the side of your eye while looking straight ahead.

Gathering this data, the ophthalmologist can determine whether you’re eligible to be certified as sight impaired or severely sight impaired.

Following a diagnosis, social services will be forwarded your information.

This is so they can assess your needs and provide adequate support, such as help with mobility.

Strictly Come Dancing will be on BBC One, Saturday October 17 at 7:50pm.
