Everyone’s sex drive is different so some people have sex more often than others. Your libido fluctuates as you age and may be higher or lower due to your personal circumstances. Relationship problems, depression, stress, anxiety, and exhaustion all contribute towards a low sex drive.

You may have found yourself relieved of these worries when lockdown started, since working from home could mean you’re spending more time with your partner.

Most people really enjoy sex and being intimate with their partner, especially in the honeymoon phase of a relationship.

If you’ve been slipping between the sheets with your other half more than usual, you might be wondering if there are any negatives.

We’ve all heard the rumours that too much masturbation can make you infertile, but this is not true.

Masturbation doesn’t cause any harm physically or mentally, even if you do it often according to the NHS.

Your genitals may feel a bit sore if you masturbate a lot in a short space of time, but there is no real reason to avoid doing it. So does the same apply to sex?

Is it OK to have sex every day?

As long as the sex is consensual and protected, it is fine to have sex every day.

Just like masturbation, as long as you aren’t injuring yourself it is perfectly safe to enjoy sex every day.

Everyone’s sex drive is different, and it is normal for one person in a couple to want to have sex more often than others.

Relationship counselling site Relate suggests talking to your partner about this to prevent yourself from feeling unloved or rejected.

Experts disagree about whether it’s possible to be addicted to sex or not.

According to Relate: “Sexual addiction is the term used to describe any sexual activity that feels ‘out of control.

“Having a very high sex drive does not make you a sex ‘addict’.

“Neither does engaging in specific sexual activities, having many partners, looking at porn or engaging in cyber-sex.”

However, if you feel that you can no longer control your sexual activity and are likely to harm yourself, a partner, or friends and family you should seek help.

You aren’t a sex addict because you have sex very often, the term is defined by the possible negative effect on your quality of life and those around you.

Relate.org says if any of the following statements are true, you should seek help:

  • You feel that the behaviour is out of control.
  • You believe that there may be severe consequences if you continue but carry on any way.
  • You persistently pursue destructive high risk sexual activities, want to stop but are unable to do so.
  • You need more and more of the sexual activity in order to experience the same level of high followed by feelings of shame and depression.
  • You experience intense mood swings around repeated sexual activity.
  • You spend more and more time planning, engaging in or regretting and recovering from sexual activities.
  • You neglect social or work commitments in favour of the sexual activity.
  • You repeatedly try to stop and perhaps stay stopped for a while, only to start up again.

If you are not addicted to sex, having sex every day could actually be good for you and your relationship.

Sex is good for your heart because it is a form of exercise that raises your heart rate, reaching its peak during orgasm.

Sex also reduces blood pressure and helps you to deal with stress better.

One study in Pennsylvania found that people who had sex once or twice a week had higher levels of a substance that fights illness.

This means that having sex more often could boost your immune system, although more evidence is needed.

Even if sex doesn’t do much for your health, a study found that sexual activity makes you feel healthier and improves your sense of wellbeing.
