Millions of Britons have hypertension, but reducing blood pressure can be as straightforward as changing your diet. This tasty raw vegetable has been shown to reduce high blood pressure, here’s how.

Hypertension is nicknamed the “silent killer” due to its lack of symptoms.
If you are concerned about your blood pressure, or you are considered “at risk” for high blood pressure; it’s best you get your blood pressure checked regularly.
Making positive changes to your diet and lifestyle can reduce your risk of high blood pressure before your blood pressure reading reaches dangerous levels.

They might have a reputation for helping you see better in the dark, but carrots have actually been shown to reduce high blood pressure.
Carrots are cheap too, with a single carrot costing just 4p from Tesco.
The crunchy and refreshing vegetable is best enjoyed raw, or juiced, for maximum health benefits.
Carrots are high in substances known as phenolic compounds.
Phenolic compounds are plant substances and the ones found in carrots are chlorogenic, p-coumaric, and caffeic acids.
These acids help to relax blood vessels and reduce inflammation, which in turn helps to bring your blood pressure down as the blood flows more easily around the body.
A study of more than 2,000 adults aged between 40 and 59 found there was a significant link between eating raw carrots and lower blood pressure.
Carrots are also a low-calorie snack, so make a great healthy alternative to snacking on crisps.
Many people with high blood pressure are advised to lose weight by their doctor, so instead of reaching for unhealthy snacks, opt for a portion of raw carrot sticks and hummus.

What other foods can reduce hypertension?
If you are diagnosed with high blood pressure, your doctor may prescribe you medication to help bring your blood pressure reading down, but they will also encourage you to eat a healthier diet and exercise more regularly.
A diet high in fruit, vegetables and wholegrain is recommended.
Fatty, processed and salty foods are to be avoided.
In fact, it is recommended you eat no more than one teaspoon of salt per day.
Other foods associated with lowering your blood pressure include:

- Fatty fish such as salmon
- Leafy green vegetables
- Broccoli
- Pumpkin seeds
- Berries
- Beans and lentils
- Nuts including pistachios
- Celery
