“The sebaceous glands produce lipids, triglycerides, which are broken down by bacterial enzymes in the sebaceous duct to form smaller compounds, free fatty acids.

In a study with the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, traditional use of Canagna odorata (Ylang  ylang) for hair loss was investigated.

The study noted: “Ylang-ylang (Cananga odorata Hook. F. & Thomson) is one of the plants that are exploited at a large scale for its essential oil which is an important raw material for the fragrance industry.

“According to both of the folks from India and islanders of the Indian Ocean, the leaves of C. odorata are believed to relieve itchiness by direct topical application and also to treat dandruff.

“Ylang-ylang oil has been reported to be ingredients for many cosmetic products such as skin care products, hair protecting products, and a hair growth promoter.” 

How to apply

To gain the full benefit of ylang ylang essential oil for your hair, start by mixing five drops of the oil with two tablespoons of warm oil.

Massage this liquid into the scalp and then wrap your head with a warm towel.

Leave this on for around 30 minutes before washing it out.

Ylang ylang can also be found in certain shampoos or creams.
