Dr Eric Berg recommends four ‘big ways’ to drop your cancer risk

Despite modern medical advancements, cancer remains one of the biggest causes of death worldwide. And in the UK, lung cancer and bowel cancer are the most deadly forms of the disease.

The disease occurs when abnormal cells grow and divide in an uncontrolled way. They can spread to other tissues and organs in the body, causing further damage.

While some risk factors for cancer are beyond our control, such as genetics, others are linked to lifestyle habits, such as diet and exercise. Therefore, it can be possible to lower your risk for certain cancers.

In a YouTube video Dr Eric Berg revealed you can actually reduce your risk of developing the disease in general. Speaking to his more than 11 million subscribers, he shared four “big ways” to do so.

Firstly he explained that to lower your chances of the disease, you need to protect your mitochondria from damage. Mitochondria are organelles found inside your cells that are needed for energy production.

“Cancer originates from normal cells so in other words they are not just something like a virus that just comes from something external, it comes from within,” Dr Berg said.

“In other words there’s something that happens in your environment that creates destruction of a part of your cell called the mitochondria.

“In order to reduce your risk of getting cancer it’s really about reducing your risk of developing damage to the mitochondria.”

So how can we protect and restore the mitochondria?

This is where Dr Berg’s four steps – fasting, exercising, sleeping well and socialising – come into play.

Fasting

According to Dr Berg, eating an excessive amount of food is a “big risk factor” for cancer.

He said: “By eating a lot of food and very often, and sugary food, that puts you at a major risk for getting cancer and so the opposite of that is fasting.

“Fasting is one of the most powerful things that you can do to prevent cancer.

“I’m talking about intermittent fasting as well as periodic prolonged fasting okay so you fast for you know a few days or longer now.”

Exercise

He warned that being sedentary can cause damage to the mitochondria.

“Therefore, exercise is the number two most potent thing you can do to help avoid cancer.”

According to Dr Berg, both fasting and exercise do similar things to the mitochondria by inducing an “anti-Warburg effect”.

“Both of these things right here can remodel part of your mitochondria and when I talk about remodel I’m talking about repairing it,” he added.

Sleep

If you suffer from “circadian misalignment” you could be at increased risk of cancer, Dr Berg said.

This means both your quality and quantity of sleep at night is not good enough.

“A good night rest both in number of hours and quality is going to be very very essential to reducing your risk of cancer because there’s a huge crossover link between the circadian waves and the mitochondria and also between sleep and the lowering of cortisol and your immune system,” he said.

Socialising

Loneliness and social isolation not only will double the risk of diabetes but it also increases the risk of cancer, he warned.

Dr Berg advised: “Socialising with others with groups with individuals is just as essential as good healthy food and water, and exercise.”
