Diabetes type 2 warning – ‘healthy’ drink that you should avoid or risk high blood sugar

Diabetes is a common condition that affects more than four million people in the UK, and 90 percent of all cases are caused by type 2 diabetes. You could be raising your risk of high blood sugar if you regularly drink fruit juices, it’s been claimed.

Type 2 diabetes could be caused by the body not producing enough of the hormone insulin, or the body not reacting to insulin.

Without enough of the hormone, the body struggles to convert sugar in the blood into usable energy.

It’s crucial that if you think you may have diabetes, you speak to a doctor as soon as possible.

Making some changes to your daily diet is one of the easiest ways to manage your blood sugar levels.

Diabetes patients should consider avoiding fruit juices, according to medical website Diabetes.co.uk.

Although it’s previously been considered a healthy option, fruit juice may contain large amounts of sugar.

The sugar could directly increase blood sugar levels in diabetes patients, which may lead to hyperglycaemia.

It’s a better idea to eat whole fruit as opposed to fruit juices, it added.

“Fruit juice contains a large amount of sugar which raises blood sugar levels very quickly,” said the medical website.

“Therefore, people with diabetes are usually best to avoid drinking fruit juice.

“As a general rule, eating whole fruit is healthier than drinking fruit juice or fruit smoothies.

“Once regarded as a healthy drink, recent research indicates that that regular consumption of fruit juice may increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.”

Whole fruit is a better option for diabetes patients, as it tends to contain soluble fibre, it added.

Soluble fibre improves digestion, which slows down the rate that sugar is absorbed into the blood.

That limits the risk of blood sugar spikes, whereas fruit juice can have the opposite effect.

But, you should still eat whole fruits in moderation, and slowly. Smaller portions are a better option.

Many people may have diabetes without even knowing it, because the signs and symptoms don’t necessarily make you feel unwell.
