Cleaning hack: Simple method to clean pans with baking soda
Baking soda has been claimed to transform people’s cleaning abilities as one of the world’s best-kept secrets. But while it’s usually used for baking cakes at home, your baking soda also has a number of health benefits, including preventing bad breath, and getting rid of painful mouth ulcers.
Baking soda, which is known as bicarbonate of soda in the UK, is a cheap alternative to expensive cleaning products.
It’s great for getting rid of stains and bad smells, but it’s also been claimed to benefit your health.
Some people have reported having whiter teeth after regularly using baking soda, while others say it enhances their athletic performance.
These are the top ways that bicarbonate of soda can improve your health.

Heartburn
Baking soda has been claimed to neutralise the stomach acid that causes acid reflux.
Dissolve a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of cold water and slowly drink the mixture.
But you should avoid regularly drinking baking soda, as it can lead to some heart problems.
Itchy skin
A baking soda bath helps to soothe itchy skin from bug bites or bee stings, according to dietitian Ryan Raman.
“To make a baking soda bath, add 1–2 cups of baking soda to a lukewarm bath. Make sure the affected area is soaked thoroughly,” he told medical website Healthline.

Clean foods
If you’re worried about pesticides being found on your fruit and vegetables, baking soda is for you.
Soaking your produce in a baking soda wash is the most effective way of removing pesticides without peeling them, scientists have revealed.
Exercise
Some people use baking soda to enhance their exercise performance, said Raman.
It has a high pH, which helps to delay fatigue. Preventing fatigue from developing means that you can continue exercising for longer.
Deodorant
It may not be the first thing you think of, but baking soda makes an ideal deodorant.
“Sweat only gains an odour after it’s broken down by bacteria in your armpits,” said Raman.
“These bacteria convert your sweat into acidic waste products that give sweat its odour.
“Baking soda may eliminate the smell of sweat by making the odours less acidic. Try patting baking soda onto your armpits, and you may notice a difference.”
Mouth ulcers
Baking soda has been claimed to limit the pain of canker sores in the mouth.
Canker sores are small, painful ulcers. They don’t form on the lips and they aren’t contagious. But they can be unpleasant.
Simply rinse your mouth with a baking soda mouthwash to relieve the painful symptoms of canker sores.
Bad breath
Bad breath is caused by a build-up of bacteria in the mouth, and is often linked with gum disease.
A baking soda mouthwash inhibits bacterial growth as it increases the salivary pH.
Add half a teaspoon of baking soda to a glass of warm water, and swish it around your mouth as you would for any other mouthwash.
