A 105-Year-Old New Jersey Woman Who Beat Covid Swears By This Snack

She’s not an influencer, but after fighting off what could have been a deadly bout of coronavirus at the age of 105, it’s safe to say that the world is taking stock of what Lucia DeClerck does when it comes to health and diet. The New Jersey woman who contracted the coronavirus after receiving her second dose of the vaccine has now credited her ongoing good health to a rather intriguing snack: gin-soaked raisins.

News of DeClerck’s health battle and surprising diet choices made headlines recently when the New Jersey woman, who lives in a nursing home, learned she had been infected by the virus in January. The New York Times reported that she had showed few symptoms and within two weeks, was “back in her room, holding her rosary beads and wearing her trademark sunglasses and knit hat.”

Having fully recovered from the virus, DeClerck went on to tell the publication about her rather peculiar eating habits, which saw her eat nine gin-soaked raisins every morning. “Fill a jar,” she explained to The New York Times, “nine raisins a day after it sits for nine days.”

Since the news made headlines, it’s gone global and DeClerck is becoming something of an influencer. In fact, we wouldn’t be surprised if Gwyneth Paltrow soon starts peddling gin-soaked raisins on Goop’s website. New Jersey’s governor, Phil Murphy, even called DeClerck for a congratulatory chat and told journalists, “What an uplifting conversation.”
