Amber Tamblyn Writes Epic Poem Celebrating Self-Care — Read It Here!

Amber Tamblyn has always been a poet. Now she’s lending her creative energies to beauty company Olay, by writing a poem to celebrate self-care and wellness for all those who identify as women. The actress is sharing her manifesto exclusively with Us Weekly.

“My inspiration for this hybrid poem-manifesto was to highlight the ways in which our bodies can individually and uniquely endure and inspire,” Tamblyn tells Us. “I wanted to write about the simple things we can do to nurture ourselves in a world that can often make it very difficult to do so.”

For the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants actress, 36, it’s natural to express herself in verse. “Poetry is and always has been the root of everything I do and am. It is the seed from which all communication flourishes and thrives,” she says. “While this piece isn’t a straightforward poem, it certainly incorporates the imagination of a poem, taking ideas we value as human beings, such as self-care, and expanding on them, poetically.”

She adds, “This was an important approach for me as its writer because I wanted the piece to feel personal and intimate when speaking to the next generation of women and non-binary voices who are our future.”

And the star thinks that self-care and wellness are topics worth discussing for all humans. “Self-care is often a privilege and in some cases, a luxury. But not all self-care has to be,” she says. “It is deeply personal and different for different people, depending on their lived experiences.”

To keep herself healthy, Tamblyn — who wanted to team up with Olay because she considers it “a brand that has empowered women for generations, not just with their products but also with their messaging” — concentrates on being gentle with herself. “I practice self-care by resting as much as I can, when I can. By not comparing my successes to the successes of others. By reading, by working out, by eating healthy but also by enjoying damn good food,” she says. “By meditating and engaging in deep conversations bound by strong friendships. Self-care, to me, is also fighting for the right of others to be afforded these same privileges.”

Other than that, she makes sure to put SPF on daily! “I always wash my face twice a day and use a good face cream and always an SPF during the day,” she says. “There’s so much I can’t control out there in the world, and the toll it will take on my body and my mind, so for me, this is one small thing I can do for myself.”

“The Braveness of Being: Olay’s Manifesto for Self Care” by Amber Tamblyn

As you graduate into the next chapters of your life,
see your body as a brilliance that cannot be contained.

See the boldness of your dare,
the dawning of you, rising to its power,
radiating into the world, your journey’s brightness.

As you move into the next languages of your story,
celebrate all that has been conjured and conquered to get here,
and all that must be cherished and nurtured
to keep going.

See your body’s protection as the gift
you were given, and give,
for the past and future armors of your skin:

Be delicate to the touch,
soothing in a world of severity,
resilient against the odds.

As you move into the next intentions of your trajectory,
be a crescendo of kindness and courage to that which you live in:
Your skin.

Sing the song of self care
not just for yourself
but for those who are still unsung.

Stand in solidarity with your sisters,
in our collective safety,
not just one woman at a time,
but for all of womankind.

As you enter into the braveness of being,
always remember to pass on
the wisdom of your worn womanhood:
your skin’s legacy,
to the next generation
of the wise.
